UK Startup Plans to Create Gaming Console for Dogs

Joipaw, a British startup, announces plans to create a game console and video game created specifically to help dogs stay healthy.

Joipaw, a startup company in the UK, has revealed plans to create a gaming console exclusively for dogs called the Joipaw Console. At first, it might seem that the Joipaw consolidation was revealed as a joke, and some may still find it unbelievable. However, there are well-thought-out intentions and goals for the device, which comes with a variety of games that dogs can enjoy and benefit from.

The startup began when founders Dersim Avdar and Marco Jenny combined their technical knowledge with their need for a dog sitter to occupy their active canine companion while they were out of the house. The goal of Joipaw is to add more animal inclusivity to technological advancement and human society by giving animals their own customized and mentally beneficial video games.

Although the Joipaw console is still in the prototype stage, the company still has a specific plan for what it wants the console and its games to achieve. The overall goal of the games is to help the dog’s cognitive health. As for games, Beautiful mole seems to be a popular go-to game that has found some success with its four-legged players. This version of Beautiful mole has the same gameplay goals as a human, but with dogs tapping a touchscreen with their noses. Another game involves dogs choosing which part of a picture shows more bubbles. Some games may require a motion tracker for the dog’s collar. Both games reward their doggy participants with a treat that is distributed through the console.

While the idea of a dog-only console may seem far-fetched at first, previous research suggests it might not be such a bad idea after all. Avdar stated that after considering creating a console for his dog, he read a 2017 study that found cognitive health benefits in over 300 dogs and 20 wolves with aging brains who played touchscreen games. While it was emphasized that screen time should not replace humans interacting with their dogs, there is some promise in introducing dogs to the world of technology.

Needless to say, the idea of an entire console dedicated to gaming for people’s furry friends is very out-of-the-box, and it remains to be seen whether it will catch on with gaming pet owners. Hopefully, current and future research will continue to find out what other benefits pets can gain from technological interaction. A new gaming console just for dogs takes the already established pet technology to a whole new and possibly groundbreaking level. Ultimately, the console’s success will depend on how many canine companions will also be gamers.
