This funky video game series from the 90s could become an Amazon movie

Another video game franchise looks set to get a movie, as a new report says Amazon Studios is developing a movie based on the ’90s Sega game series ToeJam & Earl.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the ToeJam & Earl movie will be produced by Unanimous Media and NBA superstar Stephen Curry’s Story Kitchen, the production company of John Wick creator Derek Kolstad and Sonic the Hedgehog producer Dmitri M. Johnson.

The original ToeJam & Earl was released on the Sega Genesis in 1991. It was followed by a platform sequel in 1993 called Panic in Funkotron, then ToeJam & Earl III: Mission to Earth in 2002. The series follows two aliens who come ashore to get their groove on.

Amazon’s ToeJam & Earl movie is written by Amos Vernon and Nunzio Randazzo, who previously wrote Hotel Transylvania 4, according to THR.

ToeJam & Earl would be Amazon’s last video game production adapted for film or television. Amazon also produces the Fallout TV series and could tackle Disco Elysium and Life Is Strange next. It has also been reported that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson may star in and produce an It Takes Two movie for Amazon.

The last ToeJam & Earl game was 2019’s ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove, which was successfully funded on Kickstarter.
