The creator of Gears of War returns to the sale of the license to Microsoft | XboxOne

Like Halo, Gears of War is the other major shooter franchise that has marked the history of Xbox. The TPS license created by Cliff Bleszinski in 2006 is developed by Epic Games and published by Microsoft Game Studios. The success is immediate and the public will quickly become attached to the narrative of Gears of War and its many characters. On the occasion of the release of his new book, Cliff Bleszinski returned to the sale of the franchise to Microsoft.

“Epic didn’t really know what to do with the franchise”

Historical developer of the Gears of War license, Epic Games sold the franchise in 2014 to Microsoft and Cliff Bleszinski came to talk to our colleagues at IGN, mentioning in particular this particular period. After Gears of War 3, Cliff Bleszinski, Gears of War 2 gameplay designer Lee Perry, and Gears of War producer Rod Ferguson all left Epic Games.

“I think Epic didn’t really know what to do with the franchise… They hadn’t shipped a game in a while. The Unreal engine was working pretty well, but they were growing and probably needed some revenue, even though they weren’t quite sure what to do with the future of the franchise.

Despite the fact that I loved Tim Sweeney and Epic Games VP Mark Rein, and we’re still in touch by the way, when the IP was sold to Microsoft, the only phone call I got came from Phil Spencer. Not true ? And this is Phil. Phil is, as they say, a gentleman and a scholar.”

With Epic Games in need of cash in 2014 and three of the franchise’s mainstays gone, reselling the franchise became one of the only solutions for Tim Sweeney and Mark Rein’s group. Subsequently, teams from The Coalition studio switched to the Gears of War license by delivering Gears 4 in 2016 and then Gears 5 in 2019.

These last two opuses are quite good despite the fact that some players find them less endearing and successful than the first. In the meantime, Gears 6 is well in Microsoft’s pipes and we will have to wait another 2 or 3 years before knowing more.
