The Addams Family series Wednesday broke record after record on Netflix and less than a month after its release it is the third most watched Netflix series of all time (behind Play octopus and season 4 of Stranger Things). However, it all takes a somewhat paradoxical turn if you look more closely behind the scenes: As with many other Netflix series, the streaming provider is actually only responsible for the distribution of Wednesdaywhile the production itself is the responsibility of other companies, notably MGM Television.

And anyone who has followed the business happenings in Hollywood lately has probably also heard that the traditional studio MGM has been taken over by Amazon. Although it was originally said that MGM would continue to act independently despite the new patronage, a few weeks ago Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke took full control of MGM’s film and series divisions.
Strictly speaking, one of Netflix’s biggest hits comes from competitor Amazon, so even though season 1 of Wednesday was, of course, largely created before the conclusion of the agreement with MGM. Anyway, fans of Wednesday is now increasingly afraid that Amazon may put an end to the future of the series in order to eliminate its competitor Netflix. But this concern is probably unfounded.
A season 2 of Wednesday it’s only a matter of time
Although Netflix still hasn’t announced a season 2 of Wednesday despite the great success, it should only be a formality (the head of the Netflix series was very optimistic recently) and has nothing to do with Amazon. Even under new management, Amazon doesn’t want to get too involved in existing productions or just wipe out the streaming competitor by sawing off one of its series. Because of course Amazon, as the new parent company of MGM, also benefits from the great success of Wednesday.
In fact, it is likely to become more and more the norm for Amazon to work with the competition, after all, the acquisition of MGM has also secured a few other formats from other suppliers, including Vikings: Valhalla (also on Netflix).

In the case of Wednesday, according to industry publications such as Deadline, it is now also expected that the upcoming negotiations for an extension will go smoothly despite the still ongoing restructuring within the responsible studio. An initial exchange with writers for the potential second season has already taken place, and the creators already have ideas for the sequel.
So we still have to be patient (maybe even until the beginning of 2023), but we are sure that the announcement of a second season of Wednesday (at least) is only a matter of time.
