While everyone is expecting a special announcement around GTA today, the battle of communication and arguments that is being played out around the takeover of Activision Blizzard between Microsoft and Sony makes us think about GTA 6. indeed in its response to Sony that Microsoft named Rockstar’s future big game.
When Microsoft uses GTA 6 as an argument against Sony
If you followed the news yesterday on Xboxygen, you could not miss Sony’s new complaints addressed to the CMA, the British competition authority. Some arguments are debatable, but Microsoft has addressed a response at various points, and it is in its argument that GTA 6 was cited.
Rockstar’s flagship game is listed in a Microsoft argument that says console platforms today have plenty of options outside of the FPS genre, of which Call of Duty is one of the market leaders.
Are cited Epic Games with Fortnite, Electronic Arts with Apex Legends, Ubisoft with Rainbow Six Siege and Far Cry, Sony with Destiny 2 or Uncharted, Studio Wildcard with ARK Survival Evolved, and finally Take-Two Interactive with Grand Theft Auto V
Take-Two Interactive, which publishes Grand Theft Auto V, remains [xxx] several years after its release in 2013, and Red Dead Redemption 2. The highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI is set to release in 2024. Both games are considered by major digital storefronts like Steam to have shooter elements. Grand Theft Auto V is also available on PlayStation, while Red Dead Redemption is also available on PlayStation and Stadia.
In fact, Microsoft quotes the release of GTA 6 in 2024 by referring to an article that discusses the latest rumors. It is therefore not a statement from Microsoft, but it still seems strange that the company quotes a specific article with this release date.
A 2024 release of GTA 6 has already been mentioned several times by industry analysts, in particular because Take-Two’s projections on its financial results show very solid growth for the company over this period. Back in January, an analyst at investment bank Jefferies said there were only a handful of games that could give Take-Two management the confidence to issue such strong guidance. “We believe there is at least one Rockstar IP that will be released by FY2024”he said.
During the summer of 2021, it was journalist and insider Tom Henderson who claimed that the game should not see the light of day before 2024 or 2025. One of the reasons was a wish from Rockstar to avoid the crunch of its teams and give more importance to the well-being of its employees.
