As a precaution, Microsoft blocks Windows 11 22H2 on certain Intel PCs

Microsoft restricts the installation of the latest major Windows 11 update, 22H2, on certain Intel PCs. A precautionary measure while crashes and other “Blue Screen of Death” syndromes have been observed.

Overall stable, Windows 11 22H2 seems to be a problem for a small segment of users. In addition to transient performance issues observed with some Nvidia graphics cards, the new major Windows 11 update is proving problematic for a portion of PCs with Intel processors. Following the installation of Windows 11 22H2, some of these configurations were indeed affected by ” Blue Screen of Death (BSoD) and other crashes.

A problem caused by the Intel SST audio driver (responsible for managing music playback and voice commands), which now leads Microsoft to block the deployment of Windows 11 22H2 to users likely to be affected. As Windows Latest specifies, this measure also concerns people still using Windows 10, the upgrade having been blocked by Microsoft on all affected configurations, without distinction as to the version of the OS used.

The solution ? It’s you !

In a support note published a few days ago, Microsoft details the exact source of the bug. In this case, it is caused by the Intel driver IntcAudioBus.sys, at least when the latter displays a version number older than 10.29.0.5152 or 10.30.0.5152.

You can find out which version is installed on your PC by going to Windows Device Manager and searching for: “Intel® Smart Sound Technology (Intel® SST) Audio Controller”.

While waiting for a cumulative update from Microsoft that will resolve this interference between Windows 11 22H2 and Intel audio drivers, the solution is in your hands. If you do not want to wait for the deployment of a patch, it is possible to manually update the Intel driver. This is done by going directly to look for the driver in question in the drivers section of your PC manufacturer’s site, or by going directly through the optional updates offered under Windows Update.

If you update said driver to a version newer than 10.29.0.5152 or 10.30.0.5152, Windows 11 22H2 compatibility restriction should logically be lifted.
