American Nightmare (The Purge)
This is one of the sagas that has established itself in recent years. The universe ofAmerican Nightmare, or The Purge in English, describes an alternate world where the US government allows almost all crime for 12 hours each year. This event is called the Purge. The goal ? Reduce crime by allowing everyone’s impulses to express themselves freely for one night. Initially written and directed by American James DeMonaco, the franchise was subsequently entrusted to other filmmakers. For the fourth and fifth opus, the one at the origin of everything was only in the script. He will return to the oven and the mill for the sixth film. Another notable creative behind the project, Jason Blum, founder and boss of the horror film production house Blumhouse, and Michael Bay, famous director of Transformers and Pearl Harbor, are producing the various feature films.
Story-wise, the first movie is a Home-Invasion-style behind-the-scenes. Like Panic Room, it presents the adventures of a family whose house is taken by storm. Unlike David Fincher’s film, American Nightmare adds the Purge principle. Confined to a single house in the early films, the sequels offer a much larger universe, depicting Purges within major North American cities. More or less independent stories are told there, even if we find recurring characters, always in this alternative universe. To further deepen the concept, a series consisting of two seasons and called The Purge was also born between 2018 and 2019.
Stephen King’s cult work has had the right to recent adaptations. From the universe of the most adapted author in the history of cinema, the two “It” feature films by Andrés Muschietti are available on Prime Video. In October 1988, twelve-year-old Bill Denbrough made a paper sailboat for Georgie, his brother two years his junior. Georgie is sailing the boat through the rainy streets of small town Derry when it falls into the sewers. As he tries to retrieve it, Georgie sees a clown through the water drain. The latter, who introduces himself as Pennywise, encourages Georgie to approach, then tears off his arm and drags him into the sewers. The rest of the film tells the story of Bill and his group of friends a few months later.
The two reappropriations of Pennywise stories appeared almost 30 years after the original TV movies. Enough to traumatize an entire new generation… And the expected result has, it seems, been fully achieved. With more than $700 million in worldwide box office receipts, the first part of the remake rose to tenth place among the films that attracted the most people in theaters in 2017. That year, the film even surpassed works like Dunkirk, Logan or even Kong: Skull Island. An operation all the more profitable when you know that the film cost “only” 35 million dollars. It even became the highest-grossing horror film in cinema history.

Conjuring: The Warren Files
Still in the critical and commercial successes of the last decade, you can discover one of the horrific universes initiated by James Wan. For Conjuring: The Warren Files, the creator of Saw tackled the theme of exorcism and occult apparitions. Released in July 2013, this film is the first to adapt the stories of the Warren spouses. Indeed, this duo really existed. During the second half of the 20th century, they described themselves as the “greatest demon hunters in the world”. Between 1988 and 2004, they published 6 books narrating their professional anecdotes around the world. At the same time, they accumulate many relics, supposedly evil, in one of the rooms of their house. Visible in the film, the latter had been transformed into a museum in the 2010s. However, it had to close for administrative reasons.
This 1 hour and 52 minute feature film takes place in 1971. We discover Roger and Carolyn Perron who move into a farm in Harrisville with their five daughters. Arrived in front of the building, their dog refuses to enter the house. The owners realize that the entrance to a cellar has been condemned. Paranormal events occur from the first nights. All the clocks in the house stop at 3:07. The dog is found dead in the morning, and the mother wakes up with big bruises. So Carolyn contacts demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren. They agree to conduct a first investigation, during which Lorraine, a medium, finds that spirits have clung to the Perron family, and that leaving the house will not free them.
To satisfy gore fans, Jeepers Creepers mixes a scene of terror and graphic violence, all through a more than disturbing hunt. In this film released in 2001, we follow Trish and her brother Darry driving on the roads of Florida. Suddenly, an old truck stalks them menacingly before passing them. Later, they see the driver of this truck throw strange shapes covered in bloodstained sheets into a large pipe sticking out of the ground. While peeking into this conduit, Darry makes a macabre discovery that will anger the driver. The duo will then have to survive the repeated attacks of this bloodthirsty murderer who will try to silence them forever.
With a budget of 10 million dollars, the 1 hour and 31 minute feature film brought in 6 times more on its release. A fervor that allows two sequels to see the light of day in 2003 and 2017. The second opus is also available on Prime Video. In addition, a reboot of the saga appears in November 2022 in France, directly on DVD. Already distributed in the United States, this new episode gleans the critical rating of 0%, the worst possible evaluation on the site, and a public rating of 8% on Rotten Tomatoes. The opportunity is then perfect to return to the fundamentals of the original work.
Zombies are skiing
A break is needed! To decompress and spend a fun and relaxed Halloween evening, why not try a good nanar? With Zombies are skiing, you will be served! In this Austrian horror comedy, we meet zombies and board sports enthusiasts during a descent. A perfect opportunity to rest your tense little muscles between two scary films. In this feature film, three young snowboarders find themselves embarked despite themselves in a wacky story. Indeed, their ski trip takes a very strange turn when a scientific experiment unleashes a horde of zombies and mutated wild animals in the Austrian Alps. Here, no wonderful country or Christian Clavier on the program, but rather a large dose of anything punctuated with hemoglobin.
Piranha 3D 2
Always in a light tone, Piranha 3D 2 is also available on the Prime Video catalog. In this other nanar, we follow the adventures of carnivorous fish that massacre students in the middle of Spring Break. Like the first film, Piranha 2 is somewhere between the parody of James Cameron’s iconic film and the very real monster movie. With a very small budget of 5 million dollars, this film succeeded in conquering the public fans of films Z by generating approximately 8.5 million dollars of receipts. This feature film to be reserved for fans of the genre takes place one year after the massacre of Lake Victoria by piranhas, an eradication campaign having made the surroundings of the lake uninhabitable. Following this event, the city was largely abandoned. In another nearby lake, two farmers cause hidden Piranha eggs to hatch and get eaten by them. The dangerous creatures then head to a nearby water park.
Without a sound
You may have heard of Without a sound ? A Quiet Place, in its original version, is an American thriller film written and directed by John Krasinski. The film was released in 2018 while a sequel was released in 2020. Hailed by critics and the public, this atmospheric film offers an original concept. Fan of high voltage films, you will be served! In a world overrun by noise-sensitive monsters, the slightest sound can cause death. With a skin of incredible resistance, these creatures have exterminated most living beings on the planet in the space of a few months. A family then tries to survive in the heart of a post-apocalyptic universe where dialogue is rare. A year after the savage murder of one of her children, a mother awaits a happy event. The latter will have to be born and grow in an environment where noise is silence.
You are afraid of the dark and tight places, and you fear that a monster is hiding in dark corners when you walk around at night! Well, the saga The Descent will send shivers down your spine. In the first chapter of this diptych, we follow 6 young women trapped in a cave. Blocked by landslides, they chain strange scenes and unfortunate accidents. Handicapped by injuries and looking for an exit, the young explorers will realize that the caves they visit hold very dark secrets. In the sequel, also available on Prime Video, we return to this famous cave. In order not to spoil you, the script specificities of this opus will not be specified. Just know that the tone of this film contrasts radically with the first. The horror is more frontal, and the action is much more nervous.
We conclude this horrifying journey on Prime Video with The Witch, released in June 2016. The horrific atmosphere of director Robert Eggers and the soundtrack by Mark Korven will transport you to this universe. Hailed by critics, this feature film gleaned a score of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. Forget the excessive jumpscare, and opt for precise light management and elaborate staging. In this film, the director tries to hide the horror with the aim of making you imagine the worst! The story takes place in New England around 1630. The Witch follows a farmer who is driven from his colonial plantation. He is then forced to install his family on an isolated piece of land at the edge of a forest. The latter is reputed to be under the influence of witches. Quickly, the disappearance of one of the children worries the family. Subsequently, other disturbing phenomena begin to occur.
